I hail from Kolkata, India better known as the City of Joy as people in my city have a happy-go-lucky attitude towards life. I am currently pursuing Business Accounting at Sheridan College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, Ontario. I completed my Bachelor's degree in Accounting & Finance from Calcutta University and thereafter I had been working as an accounts assistant for about an year in a private corporation.
During my years of study at the university, I actively participated in social activities. I worked with an NGO called Swayam as a volunteer. I came in contact with this NGO after I had attended a seminar conducted by them in 2008. We co-ordinated programmes for raising awareness for domestic violence against women. I designed posters, brochures etc. for such programmes held in different parts of the city.
In 2007, I volunteered for Indo-Italian trade conference held in Kolkata organized by FICCI, a non-government, not for profit organisation. A part of the collections from this event were directed towards a charitable institution.
During my high school years, our school organised food drive events wherein the participating students bought cooked meals and sold them at the school campus. The funds raised thus were donated to missionaries of charity in Kolkata.
Apart from this, I had also attended seminars on "Environment" in February, 2006 and "Social Awareness" in August, 2006.
I had always been keenly interested in Accounting which is the sole reason why I picked this course. There is a huge demand for accountants who understand the specific needs of small businesses, because the most common problem that business owners face is their inability to understand their finances. I intend to take up CGA i.e. Certified General Accountant, once I am a little stable with my career. Earning the CGA destination will open doors to employment prospects and a wide range of career options. Moreover, at Sheridan the course provides me with the foundation courses to earn this destination. Hence, choosing Accountancy as a field of study is like being a life-saver where you bring people back their reason to cherish that prosperity one has been dreaming of.
